Physical
Description
Llano means
"plain" in Spanish, and since it is in the Hill Country
of Texas, the name doesn't seem to fit. The most popular
explanation given is that Llano is a corruption of the
French name given to the Lipan Indians. Another version
tells that Spanish explorers named the current day Llano
River "Rio de los Chanas" after the Chanas band of the
Tonkawa Indians. Over time, it is said that the name was
corrupted until Chanas evolved into Llano.
Llano was
founded in 1855, and became the County seat of Llano
County in 1856. It began as a farming and ranching
community. By the 1880's Llano had become a boom town
because of iron ore deposits discovered in the area. The
County is part of the 1.5 billion-acre
Llano Uplift. The Uplift took more than 1 billion
years to form. Llano is sitting in some of the oldest
geologic formations in the State of Texas.
Llano has more
that its share of historic
sites and historical markers. The town is nestled on
both sides of the Llano River.
The downtown square
holds an historic Courthouse and many interesting
businesses and museums in the surrounding area.
No place in the
state can lay claim to more picturesque scenery than
Llano. The Llano Uplift is a
rock hound's
wonderland, with amethyst, azurite, dolomite,
galena, garnet, quartz, serpentine, traces of gold and
of course Llanite. Llanite is a type of brown granite
with sky-blue crystals and rusty pink feldspar, found
nowhere else in the world. The Badu House (Bed &
Breakfast, restaurant and club) houses world's the
largest piece of polished Llanite as a top for its bar.
Today, still
largely farm and ranch country, Llano is a small town
paradise, attracting visitors and new residents alike
with its laid-back small town atmosphere with access at
one's discretion to the big city amenities of Austin and
San Antonio. Llano is famous for many attributes -- it
is billed both as the "Deer Capital of Texas," and is a
strong contender for the title of "Hill Country Barbecue
Capital."
